The Sharjah Broadcasting Authority (SBA), through the Sharjah Sports Channel, has officially announced the return of the prestigious 60-foot Sir Bu Nair Dhow Sailing Race. Scheduled for 10 October, the second edition of this magnificent event serves as a grand tribute to the UAE’s rich maritime heritage and traditional sports.
Organized under the visionary patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and in collaboration with the Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, the event is set to be a spectacular display of skill and tradition. This year’s race features an impressive fleet of 71 dhows and more than 1,000 captains and sailors, all competing for a massive prize pool of approximately Dhs3 million.
At **Business Promotion24**, we recognize the importance of such cultural landmarks that not only celebrate history but also drive community engagement and tourism in the region.
Empowering the Community: The Sir Bu Nair Challenge
In addition to the main race, the SBA has launched the Sir Bu Nair Challenge specifically for Sharjah Government employees. Taking place from 8 to 10 October, this initiative is held under the patronage of Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council.
With a prize pool of AED 70,000, the challenge encourages teamwork, physical fitness, and a deeper connection to the UAE’s seafaring roots. Each government entity can register up to two teams of six participants, fostering a spirit of healthy competition across the public sector.
Preserving a Legacy for Future Generations
During a recent press conference, Salem Ali Al Ghaithi, Director of SBA, emphasized that this edition builds on the massive success of the inaugural race. He highlighted how the event revives the traditional sailing skills, determination, and patience that characterized the lives of the UAE’s ancestors.
Mohammed Majid Al Suwaidi, Director of Sharjah Sports Channel, noted that the channel has enhanced its media coverage and production capabilities to ensure this maritime heritage reaches a global audience, particularly the younger generation. The 25-nautical-mile course will run from the Al Hamriyah area to Al Heera in Sharjah, providing a scenic and challenging route for the participants.
A Collaborative Effort
The event is supported by key stakeholders, including the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), Sharjah Media City (Shams), and the Sharjah Co-operative Society. Abdallah Murad Al Mazmi, Director of Advertising at Shams, remarked that their support underscores Sharjah’s commitment to community-focused initiatives that invigorate the emirate’s media and sporting landscape.
As the sails unfurl on 10 October, Sharjah once again proves its role as a guardian of heritage. Stay tuned to **Business Promotion24** for more updates on major events and cultural initiatives shaping the future of the UAE.
