UAE-Greece Strategic Partnership Reaches New Heights
In a major move that solidifies the deepening strategic partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Greece, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar has announced a landmark agreement to acquire and develop one of Greece’s largest solar projects. As reported by Business Promotion24, this deal marks a significant milestone as the two nations celebrate over 50 years of diplomatic relations, focusing on the intersection of clean energy and advanced technology.
The 550+ MW Solar Project: Powering Greece’s Future
Masdar is acquiring the 550+ megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project from Lightsource bp. Set to become operational by the end of 2026, the facility is expected to produce enough electricity to power more than 200,000 homes annually.
To further enhance the project’s impact, Masdar plans to integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS). This addition will ensure grid stability and provide the flexibility needed to manage Greece’s growing power demands. The transaction also includes two privately owned substations, ensuring a seamless connection to the national electricity transmission system.
Fueling the AI and Digital Revolution
At Business Promotion24, we closely follow how energy infrastructure supports the digital economy. As Greece positions itself as a European digital hub, the demand for reliable, affordable electricity is skyrocketing, driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
To address this, Masdar has also signed an agreement with Khazna Data Centres to develop green data centers in Greece. This partnership combines Khazna’s operational expertise with Masdar’s renewable energy leadership to provide dedicated clean power solutions for the digital age.
Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, emphasized that “clean power and digital infrastructure are the two essential foundations of the future economy.”
TERNA ENERGY: The Platform for Southeastern Europe
This acquisition represents Masdar’s first strategic investment through TERNA ENERGY, which Masdar fully acquired in April 2025 in a deal valuing the company at €3.2 billion. This move establishes Greece as a primary hub for Masdar’s expansion into Central and Southeastern Europe.
With a €5.5 billion investment plan, Masdar aims to reach 6 gigawatts (GW) of operational capacity in the region by 2030. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, noted that these agreements are vital to the company’s European growth strategy, delivering long-term value to shareholders and communities alike.
Conclusion: A Greener, More Connected Europe
With a global goal of reaching 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, Masdar continues to lead the transition toward a sustainable future. By linking renewable energy with digital infrastructure, this UAE-Greece collaboration sets a blueprint for how nations can achieve economic competitiveness while meeting climate objectives.
